Modell Bauhaus
Modell Bauhaus Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin
Installation "Do-It-Yourself Bauhaus" - Christine Hill
The installation "Do-It-Yourself Bauhaus" by Christine Hill, which is shown in the atrium of the Martin-Gropius-Bau is the center of the exhibition. Therewith Christine Hill is the only artist who is represented with a contemporary contribution in conjunction with the anniversary exhibiton of the legendary school for architecture, design and art at the turn of the century.
Exhibition
July 22 - October 4 2009, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
The artist, born in America, is a professor at the Bauhaus-University Weimar since 2004. Within the context of the anniversary celebration, she scrutinizes the meaning of the Bauhaus, both for every-day society and in contemporary home decor. Based on the philosophy and modus operandi of her Volksboutique, established in New York at the beginning of the 1990s and with which she participated in documenta X, Christine Hill presents the principles of the Bauhaus in the form of an archive based on historical quotations, furniture and objects. In this way she reveals the anchoring of modernity in the real, everyday experience as the primary focus of the historical Bauhaus and simultaneously indicates the trivialization of the original Bauhaus in the present.
As in Christine Hill’s installation in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, curated by Robert Storr, an area of active participation is present as a part of the total installation occupying the sunroom of the Martin-Gropius-Bau. The motto „Do-It-Yourself Bauhaus – built your own Bauhaus“ can be understood as a contemporary commentary, which, using artistic media in the context of the Volksboutique, primarily ties in with the cultural and sociopolitical claim of the Bauhaus.
The exhibition will be shown in the Museum of Modern Art in New York from November 8th 2009 till January 18th 2010 under the title "bauhaus 1919 - 1933: workshops for moderity".
