Zeng Pu’s work is relatively brief and clear. The colors are pure and bright, which is different from his idea of simple life. The figures in the portraits have animal faces. Though this, the artist attempts to convey a deeper meaning, i.e. people inevitably reveal their animal nature at some stage. Zeng Pu is expert at using turpentine to create special effects. The blooming effect of the screen induced by pigment dilution gives appropriate blending to the featured works. Mr. He Duolin once gave his judgment on Zeng Pu’s art series –‘Heart’, stating that if there is something to be expected, it would be that these sophisticated modules may one day pose a more coherent and logical integration.

Guo Lin’s paintings test the observers’ preconceptions. Femininity is rarely found. More critically, the attempt, itself, to find such features is the preconception. The themes that she was engaged are about recognition and understanding of history and society. The strength of these topics makes them full of masculinity. The buildings in her paintings are from the period of the Republic of China, representing the colonial era. Although they have been assimilated as part of tradition, however their existence reminds us of the humiliation of the past. With similar logic, the attitude that the public has towards these buildings tests our interpretations of history.

Xu Xiaoguo’s works show how the growth of the young generations and their recognition of society are gradually structured. The artist has remarkable thinking ability as seen by his conversation with Deng Dafei. His pictures combine arena-style virtual scenes and realistic landscapes. The viewer can compare the subjects of his works with their visual impression, for example ‘Decalogue’ and ‘Peace and Prosperity’ are highlighted in his paintings. He does not depict his own opinion to the topics, leaving plenty of space for the audience to interpret as they wish.

The idea of ‘We are not the masters of everything’ is a quote from Rene Descartes, in his book ‘A Discourse on the Method’ ‘Besides our thinking, nothing we can completely by our decisions’. We take his lines in this way - no real completeness is truly achieved before pure reason is deduced. The artworks in this show are rational, most revealing the younger generations’ vulnerability, loneness, sorrow and failure to adapt to society. If the young become completely reasonable, as well as retaining rationality, our comprehension of art and our life will develop.
